Stolen Laptop in Iran Sending Its New Owner's Secret Photos, Go Viral

Britain’s man apologized to an Iranian family for having their photos go viral after posting them on a blog devoted to his stolen laptop LaptopInIran.tumblr.com. The people shown on blog are not thieves said the original owner.

Dom del Torto, 41, an animator's Macbook Pro stole from his apartment last February 4. Before the theft he installed the Hidden App, a $15 piece of Mac software that allows you to track a stolen machine the next time it connects to the Internet.

The Hidden App did its job of showcasing the new owners, but the animator was surprised to discover that the laptop is all the way in Tehran. There was very little the police can do except inform Interpol of the incident. Iran is not the easiest place to recover a stolen gear from.

Deltoro started a Tumblr account called “Dom’s laptop is in Iran,” which he devoted to pictures of the laptop’s new owners.

According to NYDailyNews.com  On Thursday he was contacted by "concerned individuals" who warned him "of privacy concerns" and "possible distress the blog may cause the people in the photos."

Admitting he hadn't thought about the consequences of his actions, he obscured their identities.

But then, on Friday, he was bizarrely contacted by the actual woman in the pictures — who said she'd been shocked to see her face across the Internet.

"They were very upset. I could understand why. The people shown on the blog site are not thieves," said del Torto.

He added: "Given the huge error of judgement on my part in sharing the story and failing to respect their privacy I have asked them to keep it by means of an apology."
