Ray Rice’s NFL assault case highlights American sport’s shameful record on domestic violence

Ray Rice’s NFL assault case highlights American sport’s shameful record on domestic violence. EARLIER today, the US was rocked by footage showing NFL star Ray Rice punching his then-fiancee, now-wife Janay Palmer in an elevator.

Rice’s team, the Baltimore Ravens, sacked him. The NFL itself suspended him indefinitely. He will probably never play again.

Good. That punishment is long overdue, because over in the land of the free, sport stars have long been free to behave like ruthless thugs without any serious consequences.

This issue is bigger than football. Everyone from Seth Rogen to President Barack Obama has an opinion on Price’s case.

Rio's Olympic venues surrounded by human waste

Rio's Olympic venues surrounded by human waste. Rio de Janeiro’s endless beaches and lush tropical forest will be a photographer’s dream during the 2016 Olympics. But zoom in on the likes of once-pristine Guanabara Bay, and the picture is of household trash and raw sewage.

In the neon green waters around the site of the future Olympic Park, the average fecal pollution rate is 78 times that of the Brazilian government’s “satisfactory” limit — and 195 times the level considered safe in the U.S. Nearly 70 percent of Rio’s sewage goes untreated, meaning runoff from its many slums and poor neighborhoods drain into waters soon to host some of the world’s best athletes.

Report predicts at least 4000 migrant workers will die in preparations for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar

Report predicts at least 4000 migrant workers will die in preparations for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. We have that debate every four years, but it’s usually about money. When it comes to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the cost will not only be in dollar terms ... it will be in lives.

The International Trade Union Confederation recently released an extensive report on the working and living conditions of migrant workers in Qatar. It’s staggering.

There are about 1.4 million of those workers living in the Middle Eastern nation right now. A huge proportion of them are building stadiums and infrastructure for the World Cup. And if labour conditions in Qatar don’t improve, “at least 4000” migrant workers could die before the tournament kicks off in eight years.

Cleveland Plain Dealer Chief Wahoo

Cleveland Plain Dealer Chief Wahoo.  For the first time it its history, Cleveland's leading newspaper is calling on the hometown Indians to dump their controversial Chief Wahoo logo.

"One day, the Indians will say goodbye to Wahoo," The Cleveland Plain Dealer writes in an editorial. "It's inevitable. And it's a little unsettling that it hasn't happened by now. Why cling to Wahoo when it so clearly offends?"

Like the Washington Redskins' name, the Chief Wahoo logo has been the source of controversy because it is, at best, racially insensitive. The Indians have used the logo in various capacities since 1947, but it really came into prominence when it was added to the team's hats in 1986.
