Anderson Cooper beaten as violence worsens in Egypt protests

CNN anchor Anderson Cooper was beaten while CNN was providing coverage of the escalating street violence in Egypt. Protesters against the Mubarak regime and government supporters have begun clashing on the streets of major cities. Journalists have become targets of violence by pro-Mubarak demonstrators.

Battle over Tahrir Square

Street violence between rival groups of demonstrators has erupted in several areas of Cairo. Tahrir Square, near the Egyptian Museum that was looted last week has become a battlefield, according to CNN. Vehicles have been overturned to form makeshift barricades, and implements from rocks to Molotov cocktails have been hurled by either side in the clash. Tear gas has been released, and shots have been fired. Buildings have been set on fire, but fires are being fought by the Egyptian army. President Mubarak has promised to step down after his term expires later this year, but those concessions matter little to many who consider him a dictator.Anderson Cooper is known for his up close and personal new reporting and the chaos in Egypt is no different. The CNN reporter dubbed the “Silver Fox,” and his crew were attacked during one of the clashes in Cairo, Egypt. Cooper was reportedly punched in the head and face at least 10 times before he managed to escape.
