Boy finds 15K diamond in dirt. The 12-year-old, from North Carolina, was visiting the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas when he picked up a diaomond.
The five-carat gem has been valued at around $US15,000.
“We were probably there about 10 minutes and I was looking around on the ground and found it on top,” Michael told ABCNews.com.
“It was very glassy. Very smooth.”
The park is the only diamond-producing site in the world where anyone can search for diamonds, according to its website.
It also has a "finders, keepers" policy.
It is the 378th diamond found by fossickers this year.
Park Interpreter Waymon Cox said: “It is thrilling any time a child finds a diamond here at Crater of Diamonds State Park. Michael was excited to have found his own diamond, as just about any boy would be, but he was absolutely awestruck when he realized its significance.
“The gem is the 27th largest diamond found a park visitor since Arkansas’s diamond site became a state park in 1972. It is the eighth-largest brown diamond that has been certified by park staff.”
