Radio 2 audience record high

BBC Radio 2 has seen its audience soar to a record high.

The station, already the biggest in the UK, now has 15.27 million listeners tuning in each week.

And breakfast host Chris Evans saw his audience continue to grow, drawing 9.8 million to his programme - up 300,000 on the previous quarter.

Radio 2 has seen its figures grow by almost 5% compared with those this time last year, when 14.56 million were listening in. And it has piled on 260,000 listeners in the past quarter.

New figures from radio industry research body Rajar also revealed that Radio 4's long-running series Desert Island Discs - hosted by Kirsty Young - has scored a new audience record with combined listening for Sunday and Friday broadcasts reaching 3.08 million.

Helen Boaden, director of BBC Radio, said: "Radio 2 goes from strength to strength, setting new records across the board."

Classic FM remained the biggest commercial station in the UK with a weekly audience of 5.6 million, rising 210,000 in a quarter.
