Powerball Jackpot Reaches $320 Million - The multi-state Powerball Jackpot set for Wednesday night has grown to a whopping $320 million after no one matched all six numbers from last Saturday's drawing.
A New Jersey Lottery representative has confirmed that this is the fourth largest Powerball Jackpot in the history of the game. The current record for the largest Powerball Jackpot is $365 million, which was claimed by a group of Nebraska food plant workers in February of 2006.
It remains to be seen whether this latest jackpot will move up in the rankings and knock out the records before it, but a representative from the Virginia State Lottery told the Associated Press that it expects to sell as many as 2,170 tickets per minute during Wednesday's busiest hours.
In some towns, lottery players are employing the strategy of buying their tickets at establishments that have previously sold winning numbers.
Workers at one store in Albany, N.Y., told a Fox news affiliate that they'd seen a noticeable increase in lottery sales since selling a $319 million winning ticket in March. Another store clerk from South Carolina claims people drive in from out of state to purchase a ticket at the gas station where she works because the store once sold the only winning Powerball Jackpot ticket in South Carolina's history.
Some people have even tried meditation -- a method that supposedly helped one past lottery winner choose her numbers, ABC News reports. A seven-time lottery winner also told the news outlet that he suggests researching numbers to make sure they've never picked before.
Strategies, however, don't change the fact that the odds of winning the jackpot are estimated to be 1 in 175 million.
