Girl Scouts Centennial

Girl Scouts Centennial, Ross County's Girl Scout centennial includes honorary newborn members. Girl Scouts in Ross County kicked off the national organization's centennial celebration a few months early, riding a 100th birthday cake float in the Jaycees Halloween Parade in Chillicothe this past October.

This weekend, the local celebration begins in earnest. Local Girl Scouts on Friday took part in a cupcake-baking competition to mark the centennial. Throughout this week, starting today, all baby girls born in Adena Medical Center will be named honorary members of Girl Scout Troop 2012 and receive gift baskets assembled by local Girl Scouts on Friday.

In addition to making gift baskets for newborn girls, local troops put together "birthday bags" for local food pantries that include cake mix, plates, cups and napkins.

"For us, it's really exciting because we're moving into the next 100 years," said Brandy McCord, an parent volunteer and event organizer for the Chillicothe-based Tecumseh Service Unit.

A former Girl Scout, McCord said she appreciates how Girl Scouts has maintained its traditions but also pushed forward during the past 100 years.

"Now I have a daughter in Girl Scouts, and she'll have even more opportunities than I did as a girl," she said.

McCord said the service unit has a series of centennial events planned for 2012.

"We're going to party all year," she said.
