According to a Gallup survey, Romney has the backing of 31% of Republicans nationwide, while Santorum comes in with 29%. The poll was conducted Tuesday through Saturday and included polling done after CNN held a Republican presidential debate in Arizona on Wednesday, where Santorum’s position at the top made him the biggest target on stage.
Santorum saw a boost in his poll numbers following his surprise trio of victories in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri on February 7.
Sunday's results mark a two-point drop for Santorum since the previous day, on par with a steady decline for the former Pennsylvania senator since Tuesday when he held the lead with 36% over Romney's 26%.
Meanwhile, Romney gained one percentage point since Saturday, but the new two-point margin between the two candidates falls well within the poll's sampling error.
The results come two days before Tuesday's primaries in Arizona and Michigan, states in which Romney and Santorum are statistically tied, according to recent surveys.
In the Gallup poll, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich takes in 15% of support, down one percentage point from Saturday, while Texas Rep. Ron Paul holds steady in fourth at 11%.
For the ongoing poll, Gallup surveys more than 1,000 registered Republican voters on a daily basis. The poll drops the oldest of five days each day and adds results from the most recent day of polling.
In the latest survey, Gallup questioned 1,174 Republicans and Republican-leaning independents by telephone between February 21 and February 25. The poll has a sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points.
