Annette Funicello Recovering
Former Walt Disney Mouseketeer Annette Funicello is still recovering at a hospital for smoke inhalation after her Encino home caught on fire. A spokesperson for the fire department said the fire began early Thursday morning. Firefighters arrived to the scene and had the fire extinguished in 30 minutes, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The 68-year-old Funicello, who has multiple sclerosis, was taken by ambulance to a nearby medical center along with her husband and nurse.
All three are reportedly in good condition.
Before it was confirmed that the victim was Funicello, a nearby resident told the newspaper she saw several people watching from outside, including a woman who appeared to be Funicello in a rolling wheelchair or bed.
Funicello was one of the original children in Disney’s Mickey Mouse Club in 1955. She later stared in a series of beach films with Frankie Avalon in the 1960s. She also recorded a string of pop hits, including “Pineapple Princess,” “The Monkey’s Uncle” and “Tall Paul.”
The cause of the fire has not been reported.
