Bret Michaels had surgery on Monday to correct a heart defect that led to a stroke last year. Michaels had heart surgery to repair a patent foramen ovale (PFO), or a "hole in the heart". The condition is normal in newborns and the hole typically closes in the first few
months of life. In Michaels' case, the hole did not close, which can cause turbulence in the heart that leads to the formation of a clot. That clot then travels to the brain where it can cause a stroke.
Michaels is reportedly at home, recovering from surgery. According to his surgeon at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona, the surgery went well and Michaels will make a complete recovery.
