Two off-duty city correction officers were killed when one of them lost control of their vehicle and slammed into an off-duty cop’s car in Brooklyn early Sunday, police sources said.
The two female correction officers — Tiffany Underwood, 31, and Africaque Smith, 43 — were heading north on Kings Highway in East Flatbush when their Nissan Murano suddenly swerved about 4:45 a.m., officials said.
It was not clear which woman was behind the wheel.
The SUV skidded across the roadway near Snyder Ave. into oncoming traffic and slammed into the passenger side of a 2006 Ford Explorer driven by a 23-year-old off-duty cop, police sources said.
Underwood and Smith — who were both assigned to a Rikers Island facility — were pulled from the mangled SUV and rushed to Brookdale University Hospital, where they died on arrival.
“An untimely death is always a tragedy and often feels more so during the holiday season,” said Dora Schriro, commissioner of the city’s Department of Correction.
“I speak for everyone when I extend heartfelt condolences to our two officers’ families, friends and coworkers,” she said.
The police officer, who is assigned to the 90th Precinct in Williamsburg, was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
It was too early to determine if the correction officers were under the influence of drugs or alcohol, but investigators were photographed looking at a can of Four Loko at the scene.
A law enforcement source said the police officer who was hit by the oncoming car was not intoxicated.
