US man Robert Kemp charged with hugging 14-month-old boy to death. A US man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter for hugging a 14-month-old child so tightly that the boy stopped breathing and died, authorities say.

Robert Kemp, 27, was taken into custody on Tuesday and released on a $US10,000 ($A10,819) bond the next day.

Kemp is described as a family friend in a news release from Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell.

An arrest warrant said Kemp killed the child “by giving him a bear hug, squeezing the victim so tight that the victim stopped breathing as a result”.

The employee told officers he had seen a man repeatedly walking around that section of the store and looking as though he was fidgeting, but authorities said they didn't know if that man had put the gun among the toys.

A 16-year-old from Washington State has been arrested for battering his mother to death with a dumbbell - one day after he gave an emotional interview questioning who could have done such a thing.

Brad George was arrested on Saturday after 37-year-old Georgina Latshaw was found dead in her bedroom on Friday afternoon by police after the Everett teen called 911.

He told the responding officers that he had found their apartment front door open when he returned from school and was too scared to go inside.

The officers entered the home to find the bloody scene, but quickly found holes in the teen's story and arrested him on Saturday.
