Robert Kemp, 27, was taken into custody on Tuesday and released on a $US10,000 ($A10,819) bond the next day.
Kemp is described as a family friend in a news release from Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell.
An arrest warrant said Kemp killed the child “by giving him a bear hug, squeezing the victim so tight that the victim stopped breathing as a result”.

Plane's evacuation slide deploys mid-flight
Plane's evacuation slide deploys mid-flight. An evacuation slide inflated inside a United Airlines plane as it flew from Chicago to Southern California, filling part of the cabin and prompting the pilot to make an emergency landing in Kansas.
Passenger Mike Schroeder said he was sitting in the front row of the plane bound for Orange County, California, late Sunday when he heard a hiss and pop behind him.
Schroeder, 58, turned around and saw the Boeing 737-700's evacuation slide inflating. The slide — which would normally inflate outside the plane in an emergency — filled the galley.

Hillary’s health issues much worse than she lets on, according to new book ‘Blood Feud’. Hillary Clinton’s health issues are drastically worse than she has revealed publicly — and the potential presidential candidate tried to keep her medical information private for fear that it would damage her bid for the White House in 2016, according to a new book.
The 66-year-old former US secretary of state has suffered more fainting spells than publicly known, is prone to have blood clots, and may be at serious risk of a stroke, according to the book, Blood Feud: The Clintons vs. the Obamas, by Edward Klein.

Snake Nest Found In Sewer Pipe
Snake Nest Found In Sewer Pipe. A nest of live snakes was discovered in a Washington state sewer pipe when a contractor ran a video camera down the line.
City Engineer Gary Owen told The Wenatchee World (http://bit.ly/1ld2Jgu) he thought there were a half-dozen snakes or more. It's hard to tell from the video, but Owen thinks they were bull snakes, possibly pets someone flushed down a toilet.

Las Vegas shooters Amanda Miller wanted next Columbine police say
Las Vegas shooters Amanda Miller wanted next Columbine police say. They were a government-hating team of self-styled revolutionaries on a mission to commit mass murder.
Jerad and Amanda Miller — who executed two Las Vegas cops and an armed good Samaritan who tried to stop them — were packing handguns, a shotgun and hundreds of bullets for the Sunday morning bloodbath at a Las Vegas eatery, cops said Monday.
The pair were white supremacists who liked to dress as Slendermn and The Joker.
“We believe that they equate government and law enforcement with fascism and Nazis. In other words they believe law enforcement is the oppressor,” a sombre Clark County Asst. Sheriff Kevin McMahill said during a news conference Monday, reports The New York Post.

Vegas killers draped victims in flags
Vegas killers draped victims in flags. The husband-and-wife team who ambushed two Las Vegas police officers were racist, anti-government radicals who openly vowed to kill cops and commit mass murder — and may have been planning an even larger attack.
Vegas neighbours of Jerad, 31, and Amanda Miller, 22 — who moved to Sin City earlier this year from Lafayette, Indiana and liked to dress as fictional character Slenderman — said they were vocal about their hatred of minorities and government.
“They were handing out white-power propaganda and were talking about doing the next Columbine,” Brandon Moore told the Las Vegas Sun, referencing the 1999 Colorado school massacre that ended in 15 deaths.

Woman frozen alive by hospital
Woman frozen alive by hospital. A California appeals court has revived a malpractice suit brought by the family of an 80-year-old grandmother they claim was prematurely declared dead by doctors then frozen alive inside a body bag in the hospital's morgue.
A lower-court judge had dismissed the lawsuit brought in May 2012 by relatives of Maria de Jesus Arroyo against White Memorial Hospital in Los Angeles over the woman's 2010 death, on grounds that the statute of limitations had lapsed.
But a three-judge panel of a state appeals court sided with the family on Wednesday in agreeing they could not have known how Arroyo was alleged to have died until it was brought to light by a pathologist in an expert opinion he gave in December 2011.

Heir spared jail for daughter rape
Heir spared jail for daughter rape. The heir of a wealthy family has been spared jail after admitting to raping his own daughter because the judge in the case decided he might “not fare well” behind bars.
Robert H. Richards IV was charged in 2009 with the fourth-degree rape of his three-year-old daughter.
The abuse dates back a decade and went on for three years. Over the same period Richards, 46, was accused by his ex-wife of raping his toddler son but was never prosecuted due to lack of evidence.
Despite confessing to his daughter’s rape Richards, a member of the du Pont family which founded the multinational chemical company, got only an eight-year suspended sentence with no jail time.
