Sodus boat crash: Webster teen charged, others injured
Four teens were involved in a boating crash in Wayne County late Wednesday night on Sodus Bay.

Wayne County sheriff’s deputies said Tyler J. Ocwieja, 19, of Webster was charged with boating while intoxicated after he drove a 20-foot boat into a break wall at the entrance to Sodus Bay about 11:30 p.m. The crash occurred about one hour after a fireworks display over the bay had ended, deputies said.

Ocwieja was headed north as he allegedly drove into the stone and concrete breakwall. Three other teenage boys were on the boat.

One passenger, Liam E. Wheatley, 18, of Penfield, was thrown out of the vessel, over the break wall and into the water, deputies said. Wheatley suffered an ankle injury and was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released.

Two other passengers — Michael A. Dodge, 19, of Webster and Nicholas C. Pizzicuto, 19, of Penfield — were bounced around in the rear of the boat, deputies said. They and Ocwieja, who suffered minor lacerations, were all treated at the scene, deputies said.

The U.S. Coast Guard, and firefighters from several Wayne County departments assisted at the scene.

Ocwieja was also charged with refusal to submit to a preliminary breath test, reckless operation of a vessel, operating at more than 5 mph within 100 feet of shore and second-degree reckless endangerment, deputies said. He was arraigned in Huron Town Court and was released.

Ocwiejka is expected to answer the charges in Sodus Town Court at a later date.
