Jay-Z is no longer Jay-Z, according to his Roc Nation label, after the hip-hop titan made the controversial decision to drop his trade mark hyphen from his name becoming simply Jay Z in the shocking move!

Apparently according to the hip hop mogul's followers the '99 Problems' hit maker actually dropped the hyphen years ago when he released his 'Blueprint III' album in 2009 but for some bizarre reason the name change never took off.

According to a tweet from Billboard editor Joe Levy he was informed by Jay's label that from now on the rapper will officially be called Jay Z instead posting: “Breaking: Jay Z has dropped the hyphen from his name, according to his label. I am not kidding. (Wish I was.) Copy editors: take note.”

When followers reminded him of the dramatic name change in 2009 he responded: “"Didn't take, though. The hyphen is strong.

"Didn't take anywhere. NYT, all media, fans. Or the cover of [Blueprint III], for that matter. iTunes credits 'JAY Z'; cover says 'JAY-Z'."

Jay-Z or Jay Z or just maybe Jay to keep things simple has had a blinder of a week this week scoring his 13th number one Billboard album in the US, kicking off his 'Legends Of Summer' tour with Justin Timberlake and visiting the real Magna Carta, the medieval document that inspired his latest album.

He announced earlier this week he would be playing a string of arena dates in the UK and Ireland this October. Tickets went on sale at 9am this morning.
