Ferris wheel 'SkyView Atlanta' to open today

Downtown Atlanta's newest attraction, the 20-story Ferris wheel called 'SkyView Atlanta' is scheduled to open to the public Tuesday.

A grand opening ceremony is scheduled for noon. Atlanta Mayor Kasim and other dignitaries are expected to attend.

"SkyView Atlanta is going to be open pretty much 365 days out of the year," said Jason Evans, a SkyView Atlanta spokesman. "It's going to be really fun. All the cars, all the gondolas, are climate-controlled, so it'll be cool in the summer and warm in the winter."

The Ferris wheel is located on Centennial Olympic Park Drive and Luckie Street. Tickets are $13.50 for adults and $8.50 for kids.

Mattias Ageheim, who is visiting Atlanta from Sweden, said he will probably go for a ride on SkyView.

"I have two extra days after the convention, so just getting to see the view from up there might be nice," he said.

The giant Ferris wheel has provided magnificent views ever since it was first built.

"SkyView was originally in Paris right across the street from the Louvre Museum," said Evans. "It was also in Switzerland for a little while, and then it was in Pensacola, Florida. Pensacola was always a temporary destination. We moved from there to here because we decided Centennial Olympic Park was the perfect place for this attraction."
