Cecil Fielder wants to mend his relationship with his son Prince. Milwaukee Brewers slugger Prince Fielder is striking fear into major league pitchers just like his father, Cecil, did for 13 seasons.
The father-son duo have combined to hit 528 home runs. Prince, a burly first baseman like his father, has 209 home runs and is tied for second in the National League with 17 bombs this season.
Cecil Fielder, who played in the 1990s, led the majors in home runs twice during his career that produced 319 home runs.
The two sluggers should have a lot to talk about. But they don’t.
Prince and his father have become estranged. They haven’t spoken with each other since last year when they met in Atlanta.
Cecil Fielder, 47, hopes to mend his relationship with his son some day.
When that will be, time will only tell.
“He needs his space to grow and have his own career,” Cecil said. “A lot of times when there’s an article or anything like that, they always mention my name in there with his. I think he’s trying to have his own space, but you can’t really have your own space when the red carpet was laid out for you.”
In the mean time, Cecil Fielder is writing a book about his relationship with his son and his career in the big leagues.
Prince Fielder is having another All-Star season and will become a free agent after the season.
“At some point, it will mend itself,” Cecil Fielder said. “You just got to always think positive about those things.”
