Tebow 'Forced' On Owner, While most assumed that Woody Johnson was the catalyst in bringing Tim Tebow to New York, the Jets’ owner is pointing fingers elsewhere. According to a report, Johnson told GM candidate Ted Sundquist that Tebow was “forced” on him. Now that Sundquist didn’t get the job — the team will introduce John Idzik as the new GM Thursday — Johnson's comments have come out.
According to an ESPNNewYork.com report, Johnson eventually warmed to the idea of bringing Tebow to New York, but it took convincing. The owner and the others interviewing candidates reportedly were looking for an “exit strategy” for the Tebow situation.

Another candidate that interviewed for the job told the Daily News that in his interview, Tebow did not come up.
If Johnson’s claims are to be believed, it would appear that the Jets owner is making fired GM Mike Tannenbaum — who supposedly had final say on all personnel matters — the fall guy for the Tebow trade. When reached for comment, Tannenbaum said he was not yet prepared to speak on Jets-related matters.
The News reported during the season that both the Jets and Tebow would look to end their relationship after the season. Though Johnson apparently was looking for an “exit strategy” from the Tebow situation, the solution does not appear difficult to find.
While trading Tebow would be preferable, it would seem unlikely at this point; cutting him would result in a minimal cap hit of just over $1 million and seems the probable path for Tebow and the Jets. Tebow’s presumed landing spot, Jacksonville, now is out of the question after new Jaguars GM Dave Caldwell said he “can’t imagine a scenario” where Tebow would become a Jaguar.
The acquisition of Tebow, though greeted with much fanfare, was a failure. The Wildcat-esque offense the Jets put together was hardly ever effective. After Mark Sanchez was benched, Tebow was passed over in favor of third-string quarterback Greg McElroy, prompting Tebow to express his discontent over a lack of playing time.
Tebow attempted just eight passes in his 12 games played for the Jets. He rushed for 102 yards and averaged 3.2 yards per carry for the 6-10 club.
Sundquist, one of at least 10 candidates the Jets interviewed for the GM gig, is the former general manager of the Broncos (2002-2008) and spent 16 years in the team’s front office.
