Emily Blunt As Princess Diana, The diamond tiara, blonde coiffured locks, perfect smile and unblinking blue-eyed gaze are undeniably familiar.
They were certainly enough to raise gasps of recognition from a premiere audience at New York’s Tribeca Film Festival last week.
This is British actress Emily Blunt in her new film attending a fancy dress party as the late Princess Diana.
In The Five-Year Engagement, the 29-year-old actress plays an English postgraduate student exiled in America.
She dresses up for the ‘alternative superheroes’ party and meets a handsome stranger who asks her: ‘What are your superpowers?’
She coyly replies: ‘Diana needs no superpowers.’ And with that, a romance begins.
Emily - who also stars in the hit British comedy Salmon Fishing In The Yemen - said being transformed by a Hollywood make-up artist into an uncanny likeness of Diana was an extraordinary experience.
‘We first did all the blue eye shadow and the lipstick and then, once the wig was on, it was pretty surreal,’ said Emily.
She said her role brought back memories of being a schoolgirl and hearing of Diana’s death in 1997.
Emily explained: ‘I played the cello as a kid, so I was always up before anyone else.
'I turned on the TV and the news was just everywhere.
'I woke my mum and dad, and I just said, “Princess Diana’s dead,’’ and my mum started crying.
Diana was just so emblematic of our country, so it was awful.’
Her co-star Jason Segel, who co-wrote the script, added: ‘I certainly have just a tremendous amount of respect [for Diana].
'She really was the archetype of grace.’
